What is included

France has no private-market price list for sperm cryopreservation: the acts are billed at the national laboratory tariff (NABM), which CHU Tours prints as 94.50 EUR per freezing act (B 350) and 40.50 EUR per year of storage (B 150); the 40.50 EUR annual fee is also quoted by the Agence de la biomédecine, sante.fr, HUS Strasbourg (page updated 16/01/2026) and Institut Mutualiste Montsouris (B150, 'environ 40,50 euros'). Assurance Maladie reimburses the collection, semen analysis and freezing acts for both medically indicated and non-medical (elective) autoconservation, so the only routine out-of-pocket cost is the 40.50 EUR annual storage fee for non-medical storage; medically indicated storage is covered at 100%. Centres ask for 2-3 semen samples collected at the laboratory at least 48 hours apart after 2-7 days of abstinence, each collection billed as a separate freezing act, and require recent HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and syphilis serologies. There are no multi-year discounts: storage is renewed by an annual written choice sent to the CECOS, and 'first year of storage' is not bundled into the freezing fee.

Public funding and insurance

Under the loi de bioéthique of 2 August 2021 (Code de la santé publique art. L2141-11 and L2141-12), Assurance Maladie covers the collection and freezing acts for every man who banks sperm, whether for a medical reason (gonadotoxic treatment, surgery, surgical sperm retrieval) or electively between his 29th and 45th birthday. When freezing is prescribed because of a sterilising treatment, both freezing and annual storage are reimbursed at 100% (CHU Tours and CECOS Marseille patient documents); for non-medical autoconservation, and for men whose medical cover has ended (e.g. after a vasectomy or when an ALD ends), the patient pays the storage fee of 40.50 EUR per year directly to the centre. Art. L2141-12 forbids an employer, or anyone on whom the man depends financially, from paying or compensating these storage fees. Non-medical autoconservation may only be performed in public hospitals or private non-profit hospitals with a public-service mission (Décret n° 2021-1933 of 30 December 2021), with rare ARS derogations such as Clinique Claude Bernard in Val-d'Oise.

Storage limits and consent

French law sets no fixed maximum storage period, but every calendar year the man must tell the CECOS in writing whether he keeps the sperm, uses it for AMP, donates it to a person awaiting donor gametes or to research, or ends storage (CSP art. L2141-12 and Décret n° 2021-1933; sante.fr); sperm banked electively can be used until his 60th birthday (age limits set by decree in Conseil d'État, CSP art. R2141-37). Storage ends on his request, when the age limits are passed, after 10 consecutive years without any reply to the centre's reminders (the straws are then destroyed), and at death unless he consented in advance to donation or research, so there is no posthumous use by a partner in France. Centres such as Hôpital Foch invoice the annual fee at each reminder; unpaid or unanswered reminders over 10 years lead to destruction. Regulator: Agence de la biomédecine (ABM); AMP centres are authorised by the Agences régionales de santé (ARS).
