Kit or clinic? The honest trade-offs

  • Price in year one: kits are usually cheaper up front in the US because they bundle the kit, analysis and the first year of storage. Over 10 years the gap narrows; run both in the calculator.
  • Number of vials: a clinic can freeze two or three samples in one week and split each into several straws. Some kits do not state how many vials you get. Ask before you buy.
  • Screening: clinics require infectious-disease blood tests up front; kits may sell them as an add-on or require them only before the sample is released to a clinic.
  • Time to freezing: overnight shipping means hours at room temperature in transport medium before cryopreservation; the lab's post-thaw test tells you what survived.
  • Portability: moving samples between a kit company and a clinic later costs courier and release fees; check them.
  • Outside the US: there is no verified EU mail-in freezing kit as of October 2026. Use a sperm bank or clinic near you.

Prices are as printed on each vendor's website on the verification date and change often. We do not accept payment for placement; some links are affiliate links as disclosed above.

Frequently asked questions

Do at-home kits actually freeze sperm at home?
No. You produce the sample at home into a collection cup with a transport medium, seal it in an insulated box and ship it overnight to a licensed laboratory, which analyses, freezes and stores it. The freezing happens in the lab at minus 196 degrees Celsius, exactly as in a clinic. A home freezer cannot preserve sperm. See can you freeze sperm at home?
Are mail-in kits available outside the United States?
As of October 2026 the mail-in freezing services we verified (Legacy, Fellow, CryoChoice, Sppare, ReproTech and Fairfax) ship within the United States, and Sapyen offers a programme in the UK and US. The Ro Sperm Kit could not be checked because its site blocked our verification. In the EU and most other countries you freeze in person at a sperm bank or fertility clinic; use our directory.
Is a mail-in kit as good as a clinic?
The laboratory steps are the same, and the main services are CLIA-certified and FDA-registered tissue banks. Differences are practical: overnight shipping adds hours between collection and freezing, you may get fewer vials per sample, you cannot visit the facility, and storage pricing is per sample or per plan rather than per account. Clinics let you freeze several samples in one week and bundle screening blood tests.
Which test kits do not freeze?
YO, SpermCheck and ExSeed are analysis-only products: they measure concentration or motility at home and store nothing. They are useful for a first look before you decide, not a substitute for cryopreservation.
