Sperm freezing cost in Canada
What licensed clinics and sperm banks in Canada charge to freeze and store sperm, what is funded, and how long you can keep samples.
This page is general information compiled from published guidance and research. Talk to a licensed doctor or fertility specialist about your own situation. Full disclaimer.
What is included
Published fees for cryopreserving one semen sample at Canadian clinics run from about CAD 350-400 (Olive Fertility Vancouver $355, Generation Fertility Toronto West/Waterloo $350, Markham Fertility $400) to CAD 925-1,000 (Ottawa Fertility Centre $925, Heartland Winnipeg $945, Conceptia Moncton $975, Montreal Fertility Centre $1,000). The fee normally covers the semen analysis and freezing of the straws; roughly half of the clinics bundle the first year of storage into it (Ottawa, Pollin, Aurora, Fertilys, Conceptia, Atlantic Fertility, MUHC's older schedule), while others bill storage from month one to three (Markham from $55/month, TRIO $65/month). Physician consultation and infectious-disease bloods are usually billed separately (Pollin is an exception and includes bloodwork), and Quebec and Ontario clinics often quote prices before GST/HST. Annual storage is typically CAD 450-625 (range 300-950); multi-year discounts are rare (Olive lists 2 years for $550), but several clinics freeze multiple samples collected within about two weeks as one batch for a single fee (TRIO 'MAP freezing' up to 4 samples, Generation Fertility within 14 days).
Public funding and insurance
There is no national coverage; each province decides. Ontario's Ontario Fertility Program pays for one cycle of fertility preservation (freezing sperm or egg samples) for residents with a valid OHIP card who face a medical treatment that may cause infertility, with no age limit for preservation, but it does not pay for storage, fertility drugs or genetic testing; from the 2025 tax year the Ontario Fertility Treatment Tax Credit refunds 25% of up to $20,000 of eligible costs a year (max $5,000), explicitly including sperm freezing and storage. Quebec's Medically Assisted Reproduction Program (RAMQ) covers freezing and storage of a sperm sample before gonadotoxic treatment or removal of the testicles, with storage covered to age 25 or for 5 years for people aged 21 and over, after which the patient pays the clinic's annual fee. Manitoba offers a refundable Fertility Treatment Tax Credit of 40% of fees paid to a Manitoba-licensed clinic (up to $40,000 of expenses, max $16,000) and Saskatchewan a 50% refundable credit on up to $20,000 of expenses (max $10,000, one lifetime claim from 2025), while Alberta has no public fertility-preservation coverage and British Columbia's publicly funded IVF program excludes egg or sperm freezing and storage fees (per the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer's 2026 coverage summary).
Storage limits and consent
Neither the Assisted Human Reproduction Act (S.C. 2004, c. 2) nor the Assisted Human Reproduction (Section 8 Consent) Regulations (SOR/2007-137) set a maximum storage period for sperm: samples may be stored for as long as the man's written consent stands and the clinic's storage fees are paid, with each clinic's storage contract governing disposition (for example Conceptia bills on every anniversary until the client signs a cancellation consent; Quebec's RAMQ covers only the first 5 years or to age 25). Written, witnessed consent is required before the sperm is used to create an embryo and withdrawal must be in writing; after death the sperm may be used only by the person who was the donor's spouse or common-law partner at the time of death and only if the donor consented to that in writing (SOR/2007-137, s. 4(1)(b)), so samples cannot be left to anyone else. Health Canada enforces the Act and the Safety of Sperm and Ova Regulations (SOR/2019-192), which set processing, labelling, quarantine and storage-temperature standards for establishments handling sperm. Regulator: Health Canada (Assisted Human Reproduction Act, S.C. 2004, c. 2); clinics are licensed provincially.
