What is included

The Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne andrology service charges A$286 for processing and one year of storage of up to four semen samples (A$214.50 with a concession card), with a semen analysis billed per sample; ongoing storage is A$220 a year (A$165 concession). Private IVF clinics generally quote storage per six months or per year at a higher rate, for example A$210 per six months at Monash IVF in Western Australia. Medicare rebates diagnostic semen analysis but not elective freezing, so ask each clinic for its schedule.

Public funding and insurance

Since 1 July 2023 the federal ART Storage Funding Program pays A$300 for each eligible six-month storage period, for up to 10 years, for Medicare card holders preserving fertility because of a cancer diagnosis or relevant genetic test results; clinics claim it on your behalf. There is no Medicare rebate for elective sperm freezing.

Storage limits and consent

Storage limits are set by each state. Victoria allows 10 years, extendable through the Patient Review Panel; several states, including Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania, set no statutory maximum for your own use, leaving it to the clinic contract. Consent and posthumous-use rules also vary by state. Regulator: State regulators (for example VARTA in Victoria); clinics accredited by the Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee (RTAC).
