Sperm Storage Fees Compared: Annual and Multi-Year Prices at Banks, Clinics and Kits

Freezing is a one-off fee. Storage is billed every year, and within a few years it usually costs more than the freezing itself. Here is what providers actually charge.

Key takeaways

  • Storage is billed every year, and over ten years it usually costs several times the freezing fee.
  • Published annual fees run from €40.50 (France) to $700 or more (some US clinics), as of October 2026.
  • The billing unit changes everything: per account (Fairfax), per deposit (European Sperm Bank) or per sample (Legacy).
  • Prepaying several years is often much cheaper per year.
  • Ask about release, shipping and thaw fees and higher rates for positive or missing screening.

Per account, per sample or per vial?

This is the single most important question about storage pricing.

  • Per account: one fee no matter how many vials you store. Fairfax Cryobank states its fees are per account, regardless of the number of vials. Freezing a third sample adds only the freezing fee.
  • Per deposit or per sample: each sample adds a storage fee. Legacy prices storage per sample.
  • Per vial or straw: the most expensive structure if your samples are split into many straws.

If you plan to freeze two or three samples, a per-account price that looks higher can work out cheaper.

Prepaying saves money

Provider 1 year 10 years prepaid Effective per year
Fairfax Cryobank $530 $3,300 $330
European Sperm Bank (Denmark) DKK 1,303.75 DKK 7,934.25 about DKK 793
European Sperm Bank (Germany) €175 €1,000 €100

Prepaying locks in today’s price but ties you to one provider. Ask what happens to prepaid years if you move your samples or stop storage early.

Other fees to ask about

  • Release and shipping. Moving samples to a treatment clinic costs a release fee (Fairfax lists $45 per container) plus a specialist courier.
  • Positive or missing screening. Several Czech clinics charge more per year if infectious-disease tests are positive or missing (Pronatal CZK 4,000 instead of CZK 2,000).
  • Price increases. Ask how often fees have risen and how much notice you get.
  • Non-payment. Contracts usually allow disposal after written notice. In the UK, samples must also be disposed of when they can no longer be lawfully stored.

The cost calculator adds the freezing fee, extra samples and storage for the years you choose, in your currency. For legal maximum storage periods, see storage limits by country.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to store sperm per year?
Published fees range from €40.50 a year in France and about CZK 2,000 to 3,500 in the Czech Republic to £300 to £389 in the UK and roughly $150 to $700 in the US, as of October 2026. The billing unit matters: some providers charge per account, others per sample or per vial.
Is it cheaper to prepay storage for several years?
Often yes. Fairfax Cryobank charges $530 for one year but $3,300 for ten years prepaid, and European Sperm Bank in Denmark charges DKK 1,303.75 for one year but DKK 7,934.25 for ten. Ask every provider for its multi-year prices.
What happens if I stop paying storage fees?
It depends on the contract and local law. Most contracts allow the bank to dispose of samples after written notice if fees remain unpaid. Keep your contact details current and ask for the notice period in writing.
Are there other fees besides storage?
Yes. Expect fees to release or ship samples to a clinic, to thaw them, and sometimes higher storage rates if infectious-disease screening is positive or missing. Fairfax, for example, lists a $45 release handling fee per container.
