How the estimate works

For each country we collected published price lists from licensed fertility clinics and sperm banks, plus the regulator or public health service where one exists, and recorded a typical low and high figure for the one-off freezing fee and the annual storage fee. The calculator adds the annual fee for every year after the first (most providers include year one in the freezing fee; add a year if yours does not) and the fees for additional samples. Where a clinic publishes no fee for extra samples, we assume half the first-sample fee; for mail-in kits each extra sample is another kit with its own storage. It ignores one-off extras such as blood tests and future thaw fees, which we list separately on each country page.

At-home services such as Legacy and Fellow bundle the kit, analysis and the first year of storage, then charge yearly or offer multi-year plans. They are currently available mainly in the United States. Compare the kits.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the calculator show a range rather than one price?
Clinics price differently: some bundle the semen analysis and infectious-disease screening into the freezing fee, others itemise everything. Storage is sometimes charged per vial rather than per sample. The range covers typical published prices in each country; your quote may fall outside it.
What costs are usually NOT in the headline price?
Infectious disease blood tests (HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, sometimes HTLV), the initial consultation, a thaw-test to check how well your sample survives freezing, additional samples, courier or transfer fees if you move your samples, and the fee to thaw and use the sample in IUI or IVF later.
Is it cheaper to pay storage for several years upfront?
Often yes. Many sperm banks discount 3-, 5- or 10-year prepaid storage by 10 to 30 percent compared with paying annually, and at-home services usually sell multi-year or lifetime storage plans. Ask before you pay the first annual fee.
Does insurance or public health cover sperm freezing?
In many countries freezing is funded for medical reasons, typically before chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery that can cause infertility, but not for elective reasons such as a vasectomy or age. Coverage varies by country, state and insurer; see our country cost pages for specifics.
